Walter Gropius - 125 Years Since His Birth

The undisputed star for the day is Walter Gropius. Born on May 18th 1883, he was a German architect who founded Bauhaus, a very famous school in Germany that was a combination of different crafts and fine arts.

Today, 125 years have passed since he was born, and he is considered to this day a pioneer of modern Architecture. He died at the age of 86, on July 5th 1969.

He studied at Berlin’s and Munich’s Technical Universities, after which he served in the World War I. After entering a group of radical artists in Berlin, he became the chairman of the Working Council for Art. After this, he was appointed as the director of the Bauhaus.

When the second World War became imminent, he decided to leave the Bauhaus and resume his private practice in Berlin. In the end, he was forced to leave Germany and move to the United States, where he became a university professor, at the reputable Harvard University.

Walter Gropius’ work is marked by innovation and modernism. His incredible talent and expertise were the pillars for many famous buildings, and he managed to introduce a screen wall system. This system utilizes a steel frame which supports the floors and allows the glass walls to continue without being interrupted.

Walter Gropius died in Boston, on July 5th 1969.
